Christians have no problems quoting pithy sayings from all kinds of people, from Oscar Wilde (homosexual hedonist) to Mahatma Gandhi (Hindu), from Ralph Waldo Emerson (Unitarian minister and Transcendentalist) to Albert Einstein (Jew), to Nelson Mandela (Communist) …
What’s the problem with such things, you may want to ask. Well, the problem is simple: These people have their own definitions of terms, and what Oscar Wilde calls “life” as opposed to mere existence, for example, is as ungodly of a life as it can get.
Christians nowadays seem to like everything that sounds neat, be it from the Scriptures or out of the mouth of someone, anyone else. They don’t even bother to look up who they are quoting, and they certainly do not bother to look up how these people define their terms. Just like with Scripture, they ignore the one who said the word, and attach their own definitions to the terms. When they do that with Yahweh’s Law Word, it is blasphemous. When they do that with man’s word, it is at best ignorance, and at worst idolatry.
So think before you quote people who are quite obviously goverend by a lesser god than the God of Scripture.
